Containment: 100 percent

Cooperating Agencies: Sweet Grass County, Stillwater County, Montana Department of Natural Resources

Mysse Fire Update

Time of Update: 1000, September 6, 2005
Next Update: 1000, September 7, 2005 (unless conditions change)

Size: 1000 acres

Location: West of Reed Point, South of Interstate 90

Cooperating Agencies: Sweet Grass County, Stillwater County, Montana Department of Natural Resources

Incident Commander: Mark Stephens, Sweet Grass Fire

Fire Information: Kerry O'Connell, Sweet Grass County, 932-3011

Resources: 75 Firefighters; Heavy machinery includes 4 dozers and 2 graders. 1 Helicopter. An Air Tanker is on stand by for retardant drops if needed.

Structures Threatened: 5 homes threatened, Stagecoach Estates subdivision may be threatened depending on fire behavior.

Containment: 50 percent contained (determined after better mapping in the past 12 hours)

Situation: Erratic winds associated with a storm drove the fire to the northwest towards Hump Creek Road at about 2130 last night, jumping fire lines in at least 2 places. Additional fire crews responded for structure protection at that time. No buildings were lost.
Firefighters successfully burned out fuel between the fire and a fire line on the northern end of the fire last night. Better mapping late yesterday confirmed the containment at 50 percent. Crews will continue to secure fire lines during the day.
The Mysse Fire boundary crosses the Sweet Grass/Stillwater county line and both counties have cooperated well to provide heavy machinery and personnel to build fire lines.
Hump Creek Road and Pine Hill Road are currently closed to all but local and emergency traffic.
Residents in the area are warned to prepare for evacuation in case the winds continue to be erratic and drive the fire toward structures, particularly to the northwest of the current fire boundary.
Montana Highway Patrol asks drivers along I-90 in the area of the fire not to pull off on the shoulder of the road to watch the fire as it creates a traffic hazard.

Mysse Fire Update

Time of Update: 0700, September 5, 2005
Next Update: 1300, today

Situation: Crews successfully completed burn-outs overnight that better secured existing dozer lines, particularly on the southern end of the fire. Fire personnel estimate the fire is about 65 percent contained as of this morning. A helicopter may be used today over some steep terrain where it is difficult to establish and secure containment lines. A heavy air tanker is on standby in case the fire threatens more structures. Weather forecasts favor fire crews today, but an isolated chance of thunderstorms this afternoon may complicate containment efforts. Other information listed below is still current.

Mysse Fire

Size: About 200 acres

Location: Just west of Reed Point south of Interstate-90.

Cooperating Agencies: Sweet Grass County, Stillwater County, Montana DNRC

Fuel Type and Topography: Heavy stands of Ponderosa Pine, grass, and brush in steep terrain.

Resources: About 50 firefighters, trucks, tenders, grader, dozer.

Structures Threatened: Five are immediately threatened, but all have good defensible space. More structures could be threatened if the winds increase.

Situation: Fire ignited by a lightning strike in the timber. Winds drove the fire quickly. One air tanker from DNRC dropped retardant in 2 locations, one near a home and one near a communications tower. Dozer lines surround about 50 percent of the fire as of tonight. Crews will remain tonight to burn fuels between the fire and the dozer lines. Weather is predicted to cool off, increase in humidity, and winds continuing to calm. Hot weather is predicted for tomorrow. Fire personnel expect to completely contain the fire in the next 24-48 hours depending on continued favorable weather conditions.
